The Keen Mustards: An anthology by AIHI
The Keen Mustards is a collection of stories that explores the realities of queer people in northern Nigeria.
The collection brings together stories based on interviews with 20 diverse individuals, shedding light on what it means to grow up and live as a queer person in Northern Nigeria, as well as what it takes to advocate for queer rights in the region despite harsh laws. These narratives offer both positive and challenging perspectives, documenting lived experiences while highlighting the contributions of queer individuals to society. In doing so, the anthology seeks to increase visibility for queer communities in Northern Nigeria and beyond, and to encourage self-acceptance within the community.
The book also aims to challenge widespread misconceptions about queer persons in Nigeria. In a context marked by high levels of homophobia and limited documentation of queer lives and contributions in the North, The Keen Mustards contributes to creating space for more informed and strategic engagement. By amplifying these stories, the anthology supports efforts to reduce stigma, ease the challenges of navigating gender and sexuality in the region, and serve as an advocacy tool. It also contributes to broader movement-building efforts and the strengthening of LGBTQI+ programming in Northern Nigeria.
